TIP OF THE MONTH:
Focusing
On Offensive Strategy
An offensive strategy relies on hitting winners or forcing
your opponent into a positive where he must gamble with
a difficult shot to avoid having you put the ball away.
In either case, the points end rather quickly. Nerves,
reflexes, power, speed, and accuracy are key assets
for the offensive player.
Most attacking players are net rushers or serve-and-volleyers
rather than base liners. That’s because it is clear
that good volleyers can consistently hit put-away shots
from the net position. Why is this strategy so difficult?
To put the ball away from the net, you need to hit it
only twenty to forty feet and it’s easy to angle the
ball out of the court. You don’t need excessive power
nor pinpoint accuracy and because you’re closer to your
opponent when you hit the ball, you give him less time
to react and reach your shot.
From the base line you have to hit the ball seventy
to eighty feet before it gets past your opponent. The
angles are also disadvantageous, therefore, you have
to hit the ball extremely hard and close to the lines;
otherwise, your opponent has too much time to run the
ball down. I have seen a few players consistently end
points with ground stroke winners from the base line
and I have seen a whole lot more do it from the net.
Which strategy is best for you? Start by asking yourself
“Am I able to cover the net and consistently put balls
away with volleys and overheads?” If the honest answer
is no, you are a defensive player. The most common strategic
mistake made by recreational players is attempting to
be attacking players when they only have the tools to
be defensive players. They try to force the play by
hitting ground strokes too hard and too close to the
lines, so they miss too much. They don’t volley well
enough to come in and finish points at the net, so they
stay back and smack their ground strokes. They hit them
so hard they can rarely keep the ball in the court for
more than three or four shots a rally and they never
seem to catch on that the percentages are against them.
As a general rule, you should hit the ball as hard as
you can as long as you can keep it in the court all
the time. There is a limit to how hard you can hit before
you start to lose control of the ball. All players have
a certain range of comfortable power where they have
relatively good control of the ball. Within this range,
their rate of error will be low. If they try to play
at a power which is above this range, either rate of
error will increase dramatically. Ideally, a player
should play most of their shots right at the top of
their controllable power range, but never above it.

CGM
Juniors Take Fourth at Tennis Junior Nationals
A team that included two players and two coaches from
Club Green Meadows took fourth place at the World Team
Tennis Junior Nationals, held August 15 - 17th at the
George E. Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Zach Lyons and Brittany Ellingson were the two players
put together by CGM Tennis Director Nancy Ansboury and
her daughter, Sarah, CGM’s head tennis professional.
After sweeping all three of its pool-play matches, the
Pacific Northwest Green Machine team from Club Green
Meadows fell to the eventual champions from Georgia
in the semifinals. The Jack Kramer Academy team beat
the Green Machine in the match for third place.
Nancy Ansboury, who has taken teams to the tournament
in each of its 13 years, said this was the best finish
yet. The players were invited to play in the tournament
by the Ansbourys.
The tournament is for players ages 14 - 17 who are ranked
no better than 150th in the United States Tennis Association
age-group ratings.
Nancy Ansboury said the tournament was developed by
Billie Jean King to give young players who don’t compete
at the national level a chance to participate in a national
tournament. The format is similar to World Team Tennis.
Matches consisted of two girls singles matches, two
boys singles matches, two mixed doubles matches, a girls
doubles match and a boys doubles match. The team with
the most games wins the match. Congratulations!
